The call for participation to the Second EDIT Summer School 2009 is now closed. The setting for this event is the biodiversity-rich region of the Muránska planina national park, Slovakia, from July 19th 2009 until August 1st 2009 (2 weeks). The purpose of the Summer Schools is to train students in “Best Practice” of field sampling and various aspects of taxonomic research to be applied in biodiversity and conservation biology research. The Summer School focuses on disseminating practical taxonomic experience with theory lectures to give an in-depth understanding of the current state of taxonomic research and its broad applicability in other scientific disciplines and non-scientific initiatives. It provides a unique opportunity for students to meet professional taxonomists and experience firsthand the challenges and rewards of field work in an inspirational setting. The EDIT Summer Schools are open to students that:

  • Have recently finished their MSc level or are in an early stage of their PhD research in a biological discipline.
  • Are currently enrolled in (or recently graduated from) a European University as a Master's student in a natural science discipline
  • Are affiliated, through current study or work, with an EDIT Institute or a European University or Research Institute, as a recent graduate.
  • Are fluent in the English language (ability to understand and communicate in English), as all classes and fieldwork exercises will be taught in English.

Call for students We are looking for enthusiastic students eager to participate in two weeks of open, two-way exchange of ideas and knowledge about taxonomical fieldwork and biodiversity. We offer theoretical courses, fieldwork, lab work and discussions with professional taxonomists, in a splendid natural reserve. If you are accepted, we'll provide you transport to the Summer School, full board and accommodation for the full period of your stay. We expect you to be a team player, eager to learn and having a positive attitude. Some of the field work will be carried out on rough ground. You should take the necessary precautions with regard to walking gear and have an adequate physical condition. There are only a limited number of places available (max. 20) and only 1 or 2 students per country will be accepted (depending on the nationalities of the applicants). It is therefore very important that you follow the application procedure to the letter. For applying you need to fill in the application form. The deadline for sending us the application form by paper mail is March 27th 2009 The EDIT Summer School organising team:
