Context:

EDIT's objective is to encourage international cooperation in the field of taxonomy. One of the main activities is the development of a platform gathering computing tools to facilitate the work of the taxonomist. The recruited engineer will be integrated with the activity 5.6 of EDIT “Descriptive and identification platform components” and located in Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, laboratory of Informatics and Systematics (LIS) of the University “Pierre et Marie Curie” in Paris.

The LIS combines competences in Biology and software development around a common and transversal project of “Computer-aided Systematics”. This research integrates with the international projects of computerization of data on biodiversity (EDIT, TDWG, GBIF) and analysis of the present and past biodiversity. The main topics of the laboratory concern methods for assisted taxonomic identification, phylogenetic analysis, taxonomic knowledge and data bases.

The recruited engineer will be in charge of the developments linked with the implementation of the EDIT common model of descriptive data and the integration of existing tools within the future platform.

Activities:
• Develop components for the EDIT platform (Java). (http://dev.e-taxonomy.eu/platform/)
• Collaborate with teams implicated in developments on the platform and spread out into different European institutions (managed from Berlin).
• Specify and implement the different user interfaces for the management of descriptive data by taxonomists.
• Get involved in the research themes of the team (congresses, posters).
• Keep up with technological innovations.

Requirements:
• Perfect command of several programming languages (Java is essential), of development platforms (Eclipse) and version control systems (SVN), and of XML language.
• Web technologies: HTML, CSS, Web services.
• Data modelling and analysis with the aid of UML.
• Command of several operating systems: Linux, Windows.
• Experience in database management systems would be appreciated.
• English is essential for communication within the project.
• French is crucial within the workplace.
• German would be appreciated.
• Show creativity to be able to suggest related evolutions and applications.
• An interest for the research field would be highly appreciated: taxonomy, biodiversity, species identification.

Un des axes de travail d'EDIT consiste à développer une plate-forme rassemblant des outils informatiques pour faciliter les activités du taxonomiste. L'ingénieur recruté sera intégré au groupe de travail « descriptive and identification platform component » localisé au Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, au laboratoire Informatique et Systématique (LIS) de l'université Pierre et Marie Curie à Paris. L'ingénieur recruté sera en charge des développements liés à la mise en oeuvre du modèle commun de données descriptives et à l'intégration d'outils existants au sein de la future plate-forme.

ACTIVITES ESSENTIELLES :
- Développer des composants en lien avec la plate-forme EDIT (Java). (http://dev.e-taxonomy.eu/platform/)
- Collaborer avec les équipes impliquées dans les développements sur la plate-forme réparties dans différentes institutions européennes (pilotées depuis Berlin).
- Définir et implémenter les différentes interfaces liées à la manipulation de données descriptives à destination des taxonomistes.
- S'impliquer dans les thématiques de recherche du groupe de travail (congrès, posters).
- Assurer la veille technologique dans le cadre du projet

COMPETENCES :
- Maîtrise de plusieurs langages de programmation (Java indispensable), d'outils de développement (Eclipse, SVN) et du langage XML.
- Technologies web : HTML, CSS, services Web.
- Modélisation des données et des traitements à l'aide d'UML .
- Maîtrise de plusieurs systèmes d’exploitation : Linux, Windows.
- Des connaissances en systèmes de gestion de bases de données seraient un plus.

- Anglais indispensable pour la communication au sein du projet.
- La maîtrise de l'allemand serait un plus.

- Faire preuve d'autonomie et de créativité pour être à même de proposer des évolutions et des applications connexes.
- Bonne aptitude au travail en collaboration, flexibilité, disponibilité d’écoute
- Un intérêt pour le domaine d'application est fortement souhaitable : systématique, taxonomie, gestion de la biodiversité ;
